Affluent Thrift

Affluent Thrift
Low-cost luxury for the newly frugal.

The return of the £5 ($7.20) lobster was trumpeted by The Telegraph, which reported that the discount supermarket Lidl was to offer British consumers “a range of luxury items at bargain prices this Easter.”

When the supermarket first offered the cut-price crustaceans last year, it saw a flood of middle class customers flock to its stores. …
A spokesman for the company said: “At Lidl we are exclusively for everyone, we are seeing people from all walks of life shopping with us and people are still buying luxury items such as our lobster. The phrase which sums it up is affluent thrift. Everyone is looking for luxury but now price is a factor more than ever.”
